Awakening Your Magickal Self

When some of us were children, it was very easy to believe in magic. Slaying dragons, dancing with faeries, casting spells, visiting far-off magical lands: these were all part of our young imaginations. We had an innocent acceptance of the unseen. We just knew. Then as some of us grew older, we were told that these things were just fantasy, there was no such thing as magic and it was time to face reality and grow up. We did grow up, and while many suppressed their magickal selves, the rest of us continued to believe in magic and soon learned that what we had sensed as children was “reality” after all. Magic is real. Granted, some of us spell Magick with a ’k’ at the end, and our dragons are the inner struggles we fight to slay and overcome.

Many seem to have lost that child-like belief that anything is possible, that other realms exist alongside our own, that we all have untapped magical potential. That inner spark has been extinguished due to years of programming by adults, school teachers and dogmatic religions that have demonized magick or simply do not believe it exists. Magick is neither good nor evil, it is neither light nor dark. I don’t agree with the concept of ‘white magick’ vs. ‘black magick’. Magick is neutral. What makes it good or harmful is the intention behind it.

If you feel you have lost your magickal spark and want to re-ignite the flame, I have a few suggestions. It is important to take your time and fully immerse yourself. It may not happen overnight, but soon you will once again make that empowering connection to your own magickal self.

Re-connect with Nature.

Spend some time outdoors on a regular basis in a natural setting, such as a park with lots of trees. Walk barefoot in the grass, or lie down and absorb the energy of the Earth. Take a walk through the woods or hike along a mountain trail. Take in all of the details around you: the trees, the flowers, the birds, the wind. Sit down next to a tree and meditate for at least half an hour. Visit the seashore, close your eyes and listen to the crashing waves and the seagulls flying overhead. Walk barefoot in the sand and in the water. Lose yourself in natural surroundings such as these. Make the time to commune with Nature. All of Nature is Divine and filled with magick, and by connecting with it you also make a connection to your own inner Divinity.

Get creative.

Start a new hobby or creative project. Dig out the paintbrushes and sketchbooks, make your own candles or soaps, do some woodwork, or sit down and finally start writing that book. Start doing those creative projects that you’ve been putting off for so long. Creative inspiration is a big part of magick and spellcraft, and so creating something new is an excellent way to help you connect to your own magickal nature.

Breathe.

Develop a regular meditation practice. Set aside at least 15 minutes a day, three days a week. Close your eyes, and take several slow deep breaths. There are many forms of meditation, but the most productive ones for me are those that involve controlled-breathing techniques combined with visualization and affirmations. For example, while doing deep-breathing exercises, visualize yourself healthy and successful, and say these affirmations aloud: “I am completely healthy on all levels” , “I have all the money and resources I need” or “Everything I need comes to me easily and effortlessly”. Say affirmations that relate to your personally. I highly recommend the book, Creative Visualization, by Shakti Gawain. It is filled with simple instructions and meditation exercises to develop your visualization skills. An audiobook version can be purchased at THIS LINK.

Make time for the Divine.

Set aside time each day to acknowledge the Goddess and the God, Great Spirit, or however you view deity. Sit down, light a candle and incense, then ask for guidance and wisdom, allowing time for your deities to communicate with you. Set up an altar, or a sacred space reserved only for you and the deities/guides that you acknowledge on your magickal path. If you make time for them, they will make time for you. When you show yourself responsible with small things, they will trust you with greater things.

Study and learn.

Read all you can about magickal/metaphysical subjects, and begin putting what you have learned into practice. Don’t just read about it. LEARN AND DO IT. What are you drawn to? Crystal Healing? Tarot? Celtic Mythology? If you have not yet done so, now is the time to begin your magickal education. Start with the things that interest you.

These are just a few ways that can help re-ignite the magickal spark within you. Open your mind, and allow yourself to embrace a magickal worldview, a different kind of reality.

What is reality, after all?
